"Company was good, however the department I worked in was appalling."

What do you like about working at Research In Motion?

"The company is currently under a lot of strain and is clawing to regain its market share. This stress is felt throughout the company"

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"RIM had a remarkable product 10 years ago but have been unable to keep up with current market trends. Their investments in outdated technologies and inability to even match competitors with their features is causing them to lose significant market share. They bleed money in areas that should be simple to control. Parking, for example, was a major issue. They hired a team of people to address the parking issue by allowing them to build parking structures, repave and paint parking lots, etc. But the building manager would take it upon themselves to do this same job and waste money/time in the process when there was a dedicated team who could have taken this task. They spend ridiculous amounts of money on things that aren't of any significance. An offer letter, for example, was send by Fedex and printed on very expensive paper. The cost for sending an offer letter to a potential employee was over $50. This could have been alleviated by sending the offer letter via email (common practice) or having the potential employee drive in to pick it up. Many many other areas that money is being wasted in the business. And this cuts into profits and employee benefits/raises."

What don't you like about working at Research In Motion?

"The department I was in was poorly managed by someone who was not ready for management. He built the department from the ground up and was unable to relinquish control to his employees. He would need to be involved in every small detail and would not allow any work to be accomplished without his involvement"

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Step down. He was not ready to be a manager. He was too keen on getting credit for the accomplishments and didn't take any accountability for the failures. He would throw his own employees under the bus when there was a mistake (often times in a meeting with a Director infront of the other employees). And when something went right, he would make sure he got the Kudo's in private and not allow anyone else to bask in the accomplishment."

Corporate Trainer

"Most important professional experience of my life!"

What do you like about working at Research In Motion?

"In the beginning it was very entrepreneurial feeling. I was given the expectations to treat my job like a small business and network myself internally. As a result I have accomplished some huge goals, and have had some big jumps in responsibly! ExamplesMany c-level training sessions, designing & marketing sales campaigns, many many business trips, multiple invites to RIM's annual conference, large audience deliveries (almost 1000 people in attendance!) Training in many fields with many types of technology, subject matter expert lectures on SMB buying and selling habits, the list goes on!"

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Since the company has shifted, things have changed significantly, so it could be an entirely different company to interview for now. My approach when I interviewed was to be honest and to be myself. The interview was on a personal level, focusing more on what I can do for them with the skills and experience I had at present. At the time they were looking for a sales trainer that tips the scale in favor of fundamental sales understanding rather than polished facilitation experience. This unique opportunity and risk is what allowed for me to be successful during my time in this position at Research In Motion."

What don't you like about working at Research In Motion?

"Management lacked business acumen as a result of visioning things departmentally, which in turn didn't fit with the corporate vision. Over & complex management was a major concern, and was constantly addressed in the media."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"To trust and empower the employees, as they once did, which was when RIM was at its peak performance and profitability."
