Engineering and Science Education, Department Chair Clemson University invites applications for the position of Department Chair in the Department of Engineering and Science Education (ESED). Candidates are expected to merit appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure. July 1st, 2024 is our anticipated start date for this role.

About Engineering and Science Education at Clemson University:

The ESED department conducts and advances research in all science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, translates research to evidence-based practice, and prepares leaders who will act as catalysts for change. We are committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment where collaboration and creativity thrive. ESED faculty have established strong research programs via external funding (including multiple NSF CAREER awards), peer-reviewed scholarly work, national and international collaborations, and mentoring undergraduate and graduate researchers. The ESED department is focused on graduate student education through a student-centered approach to courses and professional development activities, offering a Ph.D. in Engineering and Science Education and a certificate for Ph.D. students in STEM majors across colleges.

Since the program was established in 2006, graduates from the Ph.D. and certificate programs have taken positions at research-intensive and teaching-focused academic institutions as well as positions in industry and non-profit organizations. There are nine research-active faculty members, two faculty with administrative appointments, one postdoctoral research fellow, two staff members, and 24 graduate students in the ESED department, which is poised to grow through joint appointment hires with other STEM departments and a new cohort of postdoctoral researchers.

Responsibilities:

The successful department chair will be expected to provide strategic leadership to strengthen the existing reputation of the ESED department within the local and national arenas. They will build on the culture of inclusion, belonging, and respect for all members of the ESED department, and advocate for resources and support for its growth. They will also teach at the undergraduate and graduate level and conduct research at a level commensurate with the expected administrative duties.

Qualifications

• An earned doctorate degree in an area aligned with the expertise of the faculty in the ESED department (e.g., science education, engineering education, mathematics education, STEM fields)

• A distinguished record of achievement in STEM education research through funded projects and scholarly publications sufficient for appointment as a full professor with tenure at Clemson University

• Demonstrated leadership ability, including managing budgets and aligning activities with strategic prioritie

• Demonstrated record of fostering inclusive excellence
