3COM Careers & Info

Former CEO: Edgar Masri

Status: Acquired by HP on 4/12/10

3COM, a Massachusetts based manufacturer of digital electronics, was founded in 1979 by four computer technology visionaries named Bruce Borden, Greg Shaw, Howard Charney and Robert Metcalfe, and was so named for a combination of its product offerings, which were at that time mainly communications, compatibility, as in computer hardware and operating systems, and computers. 3COM offered high quality state of the art wireless access points, network interface switches and controllers, IP voice systems, intrusion prevention systems and routers.

In 1987, 3COM expanded via a major merger with Bridge Communications, at which time 3COM started manufacturing Ethernet products and compatible Etherterm software for PCs. Then, 3COM merged with U.S. Robotics, a well-known manufacturer of dial-up modems; most notably is its Sportster modems, aimed at private consumers, and their Courier modems business-class line. At that time, 3COM created a new joint venture named H3C with Huawei and began rebranding and selling new products at H3C.

Bruce Claflin became 3COM''s CEO in 2001, replacing then CEO Eric Benhamou. 3COM then got out of the high end router business due to increased Cisco Systems competition. During this period, the company went through several reductions in force and it shrunk from having 12,000 people working at 3COM to less than 2,000. They moved the company’s headquarters from Silicon Valley to Marlborough, Massachusetts, thereby changing the 3COM careers outlook for many employees.

Bruce Claflin left 3COM in the summer of 2006, and again, the 3COM culture shifted with Edgar Masri becoming President/CEO. Ron Sege took over that position and Robert Mao became Chief Executive Officer in 2008, at which time the annual revenue at 3COM was $1.3 billion with in excess of 6,000 employees enjoying 3COM benefits at locations in 40 countries.

3COM reported a 6.5% increase in revenue and Hewlett-Packard acquired 3COM in April of 2010 at a cash price of $2.7 billion and now 3COM is no longer a separate entity. At the time of the merger, 3COM was a global enterprise that was producing three distinct global brands, namely TippingPoint, 3COM and H3C, products that offered high-performance security and networking solutions to small and large businesses as well as consumers. During this time period, 3COM was running a close second to the computer giant and forerunner, Intel, in market share.

Currently, HP is offering a portfolio of combined 3COM/HP products, which include 3COM, ProCurve, TippingPoint and H3C, thereby exponentially expanding their existing HP networking capabilities and hastening their converged infrastructure approach.
