Area sales managers are over some region in the country for a large company. These individuals head up teams of individual sales professionals. They will usually look after the numbers in a given area. They will come up with ways to improve sales figures and they will be in charge of managing the employees under their watch.
Skillset: An area sales manager must have organizational skills if he or she is going to be successful. Because they have to manage different sales professionals, it helps if these individuals have motivational abilities. An area sales manager must be conscientious in keeping up with different sales people and their accounts.
Education: An area sales manager is generally far enough up the ladder that he must have an undergraduate degree. Most companies prefer that someone study management or marketing if they are going to hold this type of position.
Career Path: In addition to the education listed above, a person in this position will have generally shown a lot of aptitude in sales on his own before landing this job. Sales is a performance-based field, so people who want to continue to climb the ladder will need to consistently produce over a period of many years.
