Baker Hughes is a provider of products that aid in drilling for the world’s oil and gas industry. The company also participates in formation evaluation, completion, reservoir consulting and production. Baker Hughes is a global company found in over 90 countries and employs over 50,000 employees. Major offices may be found in Liverpool, United Kingdom, Dubai, Singapore, Italy and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The company headquarters is located in Houston, Texas in the American General Center. Baker Hughes formed from a merger between Baker International and Hughes Tool Company in 1987.

Baker Hughes originated in the 1900s. Baker International was formed by Reuben C. Baker. The company specialized in cable tool drilling and received a U.S. patent for the casing shoe. In 1928, the Baker Casing Shoe Company evolved into Baker Oil Tools, which later became Baker Hughes Incorporated.

The original organization acquired several companies and engaged in numerous mergers before changing its name to Baker Hughes. Some acquisitions include Brown Oil Tools, Elder Oil Tools, Eastman Christensen, Drilex, Tri-State, Wilson, Chemlink and Petrolite.

These companies offered a range of services to the parent company including seismic exploration, pressure pumping and well logging. Diamond drill bits and other drilling needs were also added to the company. Baker Hughes sold 30 percent of its shares to Schlumberger for $2.4 billion in 2006. This transaction was a part of the WesternGeco joint venture. The most recent acquisition was BJ Services Company. The company was purchased for $5.5 billion in a stock and cash deal. This deal was finalized in 2010.

In 2009, the investment in research and engineering totaled $400 million in 2009. The annual investment in research and engineering has doubled since 2001.
