Skill Sets: Strong communication skills using phone, email and mail are required. Collections representatives often deal with disgruntled customers and dead end leads, so they must be diligent in their attempts to collect on past due accounts. They should have strong organizational skills and know how to use office machinery.
Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Courses in business administration, office business equipment and accounting would be helpful to a collections representative.
Career Path: In many offices, a position as a collections representative is an entry level job. Prior experience in office work, accounting or business administration would make a candidate more desirable.
