"As a student, I worked as a teaching assistant with the Department of Chemistry at East Carolina University. The department is very welcoming and competent. My supervisor led weekly meetings to address concerns both from them and from us. Getting to help the students was the best experience though. It was very character-building and taught me a lot about myself. I would recommend any student to work as a lab assistant or teaching assistant. You gain a lot of soft skills."

"I have worked in East Carolina University (ECU) since 2016. There is a very nice atmosphere over there to work. Culture of learning and professional ethics along with respect come to the first priority for all job positions. I had a great experience about working as graduate safety research assistant at ECU that helped me learn a lot."

What do you like about working at East Carolina University?

"Only because of my boss and independent grants have I been able to grow in my job, not because of policies at ECU. I have like the independence that my PhD has given to me and this has allowed me to grow in my career."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Be prepared for that fact that things will stay status quo, even if they promise improvement - do not bet on it. In this economy they will let go the worker bees before they get rid of the higher up waste. It is different for graduate students because they do not expect that much from them so they are free to do whatever. Sorry to be so negative = but if you want a real career this is not the place to go."

What don't you like about working at East Carolina University?

"The university doesn't reward employees that work hard and that get more education. They just want employees that keep quiet even if they are lazy workers. Lazy workers are sometimes paid as much if not more that more qualified employees. There is a lack of appreciation for good workers."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Get rid of the higher up PhD and administrators that just sit around and put in their time. Start taking care of your most productive workers. I'm sure many of them would live it was not for the fact there is nothing near this town and they want to stay near their families. I have been here and nothing has changed if anything it has gotten worse. Management has no idea how to be management."
