Executive assistants are the right-hand man or woman to a company executive. They are in charge of managing the executive's appointment calendar, handling the executive's correspondence and preparing documents for the executive's meeting. In general, executives are assigned one assistant.
Skill Sets: Executive assistants need to have strong organizational skills. Their primary task is to be an office helper. Knowledge of how to use multiple phone lines and email are required. In addition, they should have working knowledge of spreadsheet software and filing systems. They should also have good communication skills.
Education: By and large, executive assistants have a two or four year degree in business administration or a related field. Completion of office computing courses is strongly recommended.
Career Path: Candidates with a solid educational background may be hired directly into the role of executive assistant. In other cases, they may start in a company as a receptionist and later be promoted. Internships are a good avenue of building experience.
