In 1958, Akins brought in Gerald Hatch, a graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, to focus on public infrastructure projects and metal technologies. The company rapidly expanded in Canada and around the world. It was renamed Hatch, Ltd. in 1962. Gerald Hatch was inducted into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame in 1998.
