Working at Intel in Hillsboro, OR: 119 Employee Reviews

Intel Employee

"I worked as a contractor for Intel inside the fab starting in 2020. I converted to a blue badge in 2021. You will notice that the overwhelming majority of good Intel reviews are from software developers or people working in an office. If you are considering working in one of Intel's manufacturing facilities, you should completely disregard those reviews. Intel is, on the whole, the worst company I have ever worked for. The benefits are pretty good. The pay is low. There are lots of unmotivated, lazy people so it is easy to coast if that's what you want to do. If you are a motivated, driven person this is a horrible place to work. This place is kind of like the military but with nepotism: instead of just having to worry about cronyism and having enough time served to advance, you also have to worry if some managers spouse or child is applying for the same job you are - they WILL get it. Management is a joke. First line managers, in my direct experience with three of them, have zero technical skills and typically no managerial skills either, but they love to put the "micro" in "manager". The longer they have worked at Intel, the worse they tend to be. Mid-level managers are completely removed from the fab and have no idea what is going on. Senior leadership operates on another plane of existence that infrequently crosses into reality. Training is haphazard and OSHA regulations are frequently violated, especially on the severely understaffed night shifts. I trained five people on LOTO procedures without being properly certified myself before I was made aware of the requirement - no one in my managerial chain noticed or if they did notice, they didn't care. I only found out when I finally went to get a peer trainer certification that A) I shouldn't have trained those people, the senior certified techs should have been the ones to do it and B) I shouldn't have been forced to do most of the PMs and other work that I was doing since I wasn't properly certified."

"I had an internship at Intel, OR. The problem I tackled was a very involved problem that had an impact on the development of future generations of devices. It was a really fun challenge that required the use of my skill set but also it needed me to improvise, come up with solutions in a short time and rethink the approach several times. It was extremely fun and enlightening."

"Good Company overall. Your experience will vary greatly from manager to manager, some great ones, some very poor. HR is nonexistent/invisible unless there is an issue (good and bad)."

"I interned at Intel during summer 2019. The environment of the Oregon offices exuded corporate culture with strict rules and endless cubicles. While this may work for many people, I discovered that I prefer to work in a more collaborative and creative environment. Aside from the extreme corporate culture, the people working here are the most skilled in their industry and meeting brilliant engineers is inspiring."

"The company used to be a great place to work. And some parts here still are. However, at the moment they are behind in all upcoming computing paradigms. Management is somewhat frantically trying to catch up, but still being cheap compared to what top competitors are willing to pay for top talent. Moreover, some folks just never seem to get replaced even after doing the same thing (or nothing) year after year. Lack of good projects, and/or lack of interest from managers in some groups slows down personal and overall company development. Intel needs to fix its old thinking if they want to be great again."
