Under the direction of the department head, lead clerk and/or manager, the Deli Clerk assists the customers with requests and questions. Provides samples of products to the customers. Prepares, prices, stocks and inventories products. Proactively maintains the appearance of the Deli department.

1.

Greets the customer. Assists the customers with requests and special orders.

Accurately and efficiently prepares orders for the customers. Prepares food items such as sandwiches for the customer. Provides personalized service to each customer. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods of time and participate in strenuous work.

Provides friendly and courteous service to the customers. Maintains knowledge of the various products in the Deli. Answers and responds to the customer's questions, inquiries and special requests. Provides samples to customers. Conducts suggestive selling to the customers. Obtains assistance from a supervisor or manager if unable to resolve any customer inquiry or special request.

Stays abreast of store specials and sales/marketing promotions to better service the customer. Informs the customer of the company's latest promotional offerings and/or specials. Answers customer's questions regarding any store specials and/or sales/marketing promotions.

Receives, unpacks and stores deli products. Obtains fresh fruits and vegetables from the Produce Department. Prices and stocks deli products. Ensures the freshness of the products by monitoring the code dates. Inventories and accurately records any spoilage, transfer, etc. Ensures the department is well stocked and faced before the end of shift.

Prepares deli meats using the slicer. Prepares and cuts cheese for the cheese case. Prepares (cuts, slices, etc.) items from the Produce Department for use and/or display for sale. Prepares assorted products (meats, cheeses, fruits, sandwiches, etc.) for party platters. Cooks and prepares soups and hot entrees; maintains the steam table. Cooks chicken in hot fryer machine. Prepares deli sandwiches.

Proactively maintains the appearance of the Deli Department. Ensures all displays are clean, replenished with displays and products (includes condiment stations, soda dispensers, hot beverage dispenser, water tanks and other display areas.) Ensures all equipment and items used in the department are well maintained and operate properly. Cleans display cases, shelves and general Deli Department area (including sweeping and mopping floors). Washes dishes, cutlery, serving utensils, equipment, etc. At closing, stores all products according to guidelines.

Pursues professional developmental opportunities and contributes to the Corporate goals.

Performs all other miscellaneous responsibilities and duties as assigned.

Essential Requirements:

  1. Education: High school diploma or GED preferred. Must be able to read and write at a high school competency level.


  1. Work Experience: Prior customer service and/or food handling experience.


  1. Work Hours: Be available to work various days and shifts. Some overtime hours may be required.


  1. Other Requirements:


  • Proven ability to converse in English on a one-to-one basis.
  • Ability to read, and comprehend department guidelines and procedures. Ability to write in clear and understandable manner.
  • Ability to read and understand recipes and measuring quantities.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age upon employment.
  • Must be able to visually recognize, hear, acknowledge and converse with a supervisor, co-worker, or customer at a reasonable distance with a corrective and/or supplemental aid if needed.
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks.
