Johns Hopkins Hospital
Overview
Johns Hopkins Hospital was founded in Baltimore, Maryland, using money from benefactor, Johns Hopkins. At his death in 1873, he left very explicit instructions for the use of his estate of $7 million. Near the end of his life, he set aside 13 acres in Baltimore and selected trustees to build a hospital and a university, both of which would bear his name. He directed that the hospital would provide patient care and the university would be an integral part of that with teaching and research. This concept revolutionized the practice of American medicine.
The hospital opened in 1889 with a staff of four physicians. It has grown to have a staff of more than 1,700 doctors and for 21 consecutive years was ranked as the top American hospital by the U.S. News & World Report. It has an impressive list of medical achievements and was a Nobel Prize winner in the field of genetic engineering.
