Lamar University Overview Lamar University is a public university located in Beaumont, Texas. Since 1995, the university has been a part of the Texas State University System and has 13,773 students enrolled as of 2012. The university was founded in 1923 by Louis R. Pietzch who, while attending summer school in Chicago, got the idea of creating a junior college in Beaumont, Texas. The university was first called South Park Junior College and was located on the third floor of the South Park High School. The institution was renamed Lamar College after Mirabeau Lamar, who served as president of the Texas Republic and had a great interest in education. In 1970, the college began offering a doctoral program in engineering and it received full university status the next year.
