A manager is a person that is responsible for overseeing groups of employees or departments within a business or organization. Managers perform necessary duties related to planning, organizing and coordinating events, production or other purposes of the business’s nature.
Skill Sets:
In order to perform their duties effectively, managers must possess the skills necessary to work as a team player, be able to think strategically, have the ability to solve complex problems and make quick decisions when needed. Managers must all have the skills needed to work with diverse groups of people and be flexible.
Education:
The specific level of education and training needed to be an effective manager is dependent on the type of business or organization in which the individual works. There are training courses which cover topics including human resources, leadership and motivation that provide some managers with the necessary skills and education for operating businesses within area such as retail, food and other small business types. More formal education that is earned within a college or university is needed for management positions within large corporations or major industries.
Career Path:
To gain the necessary skills and experience to become an effective manager, an individual should first hold entry level positions within the industry they are planning to manager. Some such positions include customer service, stocking, ordering, assembly, and employee supervision. Team leaders and other such leadership positions are also beneficial.
