The Mayo Clinic is a non-profit medical center and research group in Rochester, Minnesota. It was started in 1889 by Dr. William W. Mayo and his two sons, Drs. William J. and Charles H. Mayo and was known as St. Mary’s Hospital. As more physicians joined the practice, it eventually evolved into a not-for-profit group called Mayo Properties Association. This association became the foundation that grew into the Mayo Clinic of today that is known for its treatments of difficult cases and ranks near the top of most quality ratings.
The Mayo Clinic’s philosophy is one that puts the patient first. Doctors and research scientists are salaried and therefore are motivated to solve problems rather than see a large number of patients. The group practice encourages cooperation between specialties that reduces the chance of fragmentation of care.
