3.1I would recommend establishing clear and meaningful goals, inviting discussions with the staff about how to achieve them, offer support in the areas of training and support (software, tools, skill set development) and some sort of recognition program to help motivate the staff. I also recommend reorganization of the department to create well defined levels of skill sets that are marked by measurable factors to create a career path that is also tied to compensation and other means of reward. I would also encourage management to improve the department metrics (there is very little concern here without a profit motive) to support progress towards shared goals and to create champagne moments for celebration and praise. I think most people want to do good work, but support, encouragement and recognition from the top are lacking.
5I have worked at NFLC for a year long and served as IT systems analyst and user support graduate assistant. I have been working towards managing hardware, software and network support for the (180+) staff of NFLC and also providing remote assistance to other users. I have had a very good experience working there and getting hands on experience solving many issues. I definitely have the problem solving attitude and I think this will help me in all my jobs here forward.
They need to change their style. The current Chief has been around a long time and is getting ready to retire. Hopefully a new Chief will change things around. The administration tends to concentrate on one problem at a time, whichever the University administration is making a big deal about. One week we will be making sure people aren't stealing cars and the next we won't care about it at all. We will just make sure people don't fight at the college bars.
