"There really aren't competitors for this job, because it is government work. I would say that the pay/benefits would be comparable to what an average patent attorney makes per hours worked (not hours billed or billable). It is also important to note that the listed salaries for Patent Examiners do not include bonuses which are typically around 10% for most Patent Examiners and can be as higher than 15% for high performing Patent Examiners. Additionally, Examiners are paid straight time for overtime hours (over 80 hours/bi-week), and bonuses are calculated based off of the base salary + overtime salary. In other words, it is easy to make a lot more money with just working a few extra hours per week."

"For a federal patent examiner, salaries are set. For example, a GS-13 would start at around $99,000/yr. Working in the private sector as a patent attorney would likely result in a larger salary over time while working as a patent agent would see comparable salaries."

"It was good, but it can be a career trap if you have no prior industry experience. It is challenging to essentially restart your career from scratch after several years as a patent examiner."
