The Los Angeles County Probation Department is the largest probation department in the world, established in 1903 to coincide with the development of the state of California's first probation laws dealing with its prison inmates released back into the general population. It has jurisdiction not only over Los Angeles County but also the multitude of cities within the county's borders. As a criminal justice agency, the Los Angeles County Probation Department offers a variety of services to the County, including the enforcement of court orders, the operation of correctional facilities, the incarceration of delinquents, the recommendation of court sanctions, victim assistance and counseling and guidance to probationed prisoners.
