Washington Univeristy is a private university located in St. Louis, Missouri. Washington University, or Wash. U, was founded in 1853 by a group of religious and political leaders in the St. Louis area. Originally, the school was called Eliot's Seminary after one of the founding members. The name was eventually changed to Washington Institute in the years leading up to the Civil War in hopes of unifying the deeply divided local community.
