"I would do it again in a minute!"

What do you like about working at D.R. Horton?

"While at D.R. Horton I was able to work with the greatest operations manager in the industry bar none. They kept all their promises to me and I had no intentions of going else where until the market tanked. I pick up many new skill having come from the contractors side of the fence to the owners side. I was afforded both the authority and autonomy to do the job by my superiors. That made it real easy to take responsibility for the results of the projects.Lastly my daughter and niece did love the camp that D.R. holds for the kids. They told me how nice Mr. Horton was to them and how well they were all treated."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Be honest about what you do and do not know. Learn to ask questions. Learn what the right questions are. While the answers may change the questions often remain the same. You must be a team player here. If your all about you and not the team you will find yourself all alone on a big playing field unable to cover all the bases. When asked to do something that seems ridiculous, just know you are about to learn what thinking outside the box really is and the feeling of doing what others said was impossible is like."

What don't you like about working at D.R. Horton?

"Job security in a declining market. Working for the largest company in a market that is taking the biggest hit leave nation wide does mean cuts must be made. As D.R. Horton right sized the company it would have been good to have had an opportunity to move to another area within the company. When I sent in resumes to corporate the went with no response. and lastly I did see some questionable activity within the upper management of the company. Not sure how far it extended but I assure it was not in the best interest of the company or its share holders."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I did mark Senior Management with 4 stars however getting it to 5 stars will take some investigation about the practices of some of there top people. I did see how things were hid having worked in 3 locations. I did see some of the greatest leadership and some of the worst. When a C class contractors get contracts based on the performance at the house of a V.P. rather than by overall price and performance there are issues. When your 50% high and still get the job over an A class contractor there is something wrong. I was once even told by the contractor that he did not need to meet the schedule and because my boss and his boss were buddies I would have to deal with it. The management needs to understand that being a door keeper of a billion dollar company has responsibilities to its share holders over the pool in there back yard. I understood that everyone wanted to be my friend for the obvious reasons and relationships are important however relationship will get your to the table but price and performance is what will get you the job not what you offer to do for me on the side."
