In 2008, EMC was a subdivision of the Bear Stearns Companies, LLC, specializing in the purchase, securitization and disposition of residential mortgages. Bear Stearns agreed to pay $28 million to settle charges brought by the Federal Trade Commission that EMC had allegedly engaged in unlawful practices while servicing mortgage customers' loans.
