Founded by Wayne Mitchell, the first Guitar Center store opened in 1959 in Hollywood, CA, selling home appliances and organs. The company was originally named The Organ Center but later changed its name to The Vox Center after exclusively selling a line of Vox guitars. With the rise of the Beatles and other musicians who increasingly used guitars and amplifiers in the late 1960s, the store name was once again changed to Guitar Center. By the 1970s, Guitar Center had opened multiple locations in San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles.

As guitar rock popularity rapidly increased, the demand for guitars at Guitar Center skyrocketed. During this time, Guitar Center expanded across the United States, becoming the leading retailer of musical instruments in the U.S. Guitar Center headquarters are located in Westlake Village, CA. There are 218 stores in the U.S.

Guitar Center is a community-oriented company that gives back to the community it serves. The company believes that music inspires and encourages self-expression and creativity. Through its community outreach program, Guitar Center regularly gives charitable support to music educational programs for schools and community organizations. Guitar Center also hosts free recording workshops every Saturday at Guitar Center stores across the country.
