"I worked with MBARI on their STOQS open source project for a little over four months. Their team was incredibly passionate about the program and showed great enthusiasm for the young engineers who came to help build upon it. Great mentors and challenging problems made MBARI a fantastic experience for me and helped push me to be a better software engineer than I started."
"I worked at the aquarium for 5 years. Over the course of short time, as many others have expressed, I saw people being overlooked for promotions and people off the street hired with absolutely no practical skills related for the upper management jobs for which they were hired. Staff grew to be highly demoralized which is what inspired me to leave. There are great workers there that need to be recognized, rewarded, and retained for their efforts."
What do you like about working at Monterey Bay Aquarium?
"You meet some great people focused on ocean conservation. Fun working with the people and the animals."
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
"If you are a hard worker go somewhere els. At first it seems great to work here but long time employees are bitter and for good reason. Not what it used to be."
What don't you like about working at Monterey Bay Aquarium?
"Lack of effective management drives hard workers away. Having to watch good employees get beat down and leave is really hard. Slackers are never reprimanded and are given opportunities they don't deserve."
What suggestions do you have for management?
"For upper management I suggest you look into some of the middle management position and see how many complaints HR has received about them. Promote people that actually have supervisor experience or an education in management to supervisor positions. Get rid of nepotism!"
