The state of North Carolina was admitted to the Union in 1789. The first settlers were mostly English colonists. The southeastern state stretches from the Appalachians to the Atlantic ocean. It is the country's 28th largest and 10th most populous state. The capital is in Raleigh, and other notable cities are Charlotte and Greensboro.

North Carolina has a diversified economy. It is a major agricultural producer of tobacco, cotton, corn and peanuts. Recently, the state has experienced growth in areas such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and banking. In 2010, Forbes magazine ranked North Carolina as the nation's third most business-friendly state. Major tourist attractions include the Blue Ridge Parkway, Cape Hatteras and the Wright Brothers National Memorial. Some of the nation's finest golf courses are located in Pinehurst.

State of North Carolina Job Information

North Carolina is proud to offer its state employees a wide range of excellent career opportunities. The state offers competitive pay scales and comprehensive benefits. Traditional benefits include health and disability insurance and retirement plans. Employees with 10 years or more of service are entitled to receive longevity pay. Qualified personnel will receive an annual lump-sum payment of 1.5 to 4.5 percent of salary based on one's length of employment. Employees also earn from 94 to 206 hours per year of vacation time based on service. The state provides one day of paid leave that can be used for community service work. Additional supplemental perks include financial planning, legal insurance and access to discounted products and services through the WeSave Discount Program.
