The state of Connecticut was one of the original 13 colonies. The Mohegan Indians called the area Quinnehtukqut, a name that means "Long River Place." Connecticut attained statehood on January 9, 1788. The capital is located in Hartford, and its two largest cities are Bridgeport and New Haven. The state's population is approximately 3.4 million people.

Connecticut is a dynamic state with a long, glorious history. The original settlers primarily focused on agriculture and trade. Due to limited land resources, the colonists quickly turned to manufacturing. Today, the state has a vibrant industry. Jet engines, helicopters and nuclear submarines are built in the state. Connecticut is also known as home to the insurance trade. Marine, fire, life and health insurance coverage all originated in the state. Currently, there are more than 100 insurance companies operating in Connecticut.
