State of Ohio Overview

The state of Ohio was acquired from the British by the United States after the Revolutionary War. It officially became the country's 17th state in 1803. Originally, the region was settled by the French in the 1600s. They found the area good for growing crops and fur trapping. The state's capital and also its largest city is Columbus. Other prominent cities are Cleveland and Cincinnati.

Today, Ohio has grown into one of the nation's economic powerhouses. Nationally, Ohio ranks third in manufacturing employment. The state is a leader in the production of automobiles, jet engines, office machines and steel. Ohio also has a productive agricultural sector. The state's fertile soil produces corn, apples, strawberries and nursery plants. Ohio's cities are culturally vibrant and interesting. The state is home to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Some of Ohio's famous citizens include the golfer Jack Nicklaus, astronaut Neil Armstrong and the actor Paul Newman.

The state of Ohio offers a dynamic range of excellent career opportunities. All permanent part- and full-time state employees are eligible for a comprehensive and competitive benefits package. Standard benefits include health, dental, life and disability insurance. Additionally, the state offers some creative, voluntary perks. Participants in the Take Charge! Live Well! Plan are eligible to receive a $350 Visa reward card for participating in a wellness regimen. Spouses are also allowed to join in this plan. Known as CCVP, the Child Care Voucher Program provides an annual cash grant for work-related child care expenses. The Commuter Choice Program enables personnel to divert pretax dollars toward parking and public transit expenses.
