The New School Employee

"I have worked at The New School for many years and most of my colleagues are bright, capable, generous people. Unfortunately, budget restrictions mean that there are very few chances for increases in salary. My department is small, so there is not much room to grow anymore in terms of title or compensation."

Registration Clerk

"It was an interesting review."

What do you like about working at The New School?

"I enjoyed answering the phone and inputting acquired information into the system. In addition, I enjoyed answering students questions about class availability, financial liabilities, and course requirements. Indeed, if I could not answer the question, I could direct or transfer them to a department that could. This was not a written part of my job duties as a seasonal Registration Department Clerk. However, I enjoyed communicating and helping the students."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"They should thing positive."

What don't you like about working at The New School?

"I feel that a system should be in place to promote employees who have been working for a certain amount of years to full-time permanent staff. If it can not be done in the department that they are presently in, they should be able to transfer to another department. For example, a position for an Admission Department Clerk was open for employment hiring. I applied several times for that position because my experience, knowledge, and ability matched the qualifications for it. However, I was not hired for the position. There were several positions like that, but I was not hired for them. In seven years of continuous seasonal Registration Department Clerk work, I was passed over. Could not I have been promoted to a full-time Registration Department Clerk"

What suggestions do you have for management?

"When a person is not hired for full-time after seven years of working as a seasonal Registration Department Clerk, a drastic change in more than one area of the persons life is affected. For example, low self esteem festers because they do not feel worthy. They are not able to adequately pay for rent on a regular basis. They are not able to adequately obtain food on a regular basis. Indeed, it hurts when the ambitions of others seem to be realized while yours are not. They are forced to quit. People become homeless. They are forced to apply for public assistance. This need not be if a system to promote a person from seasonal to full-time employee was in check. Indeed, I would gladly go back if I could be assured of gainful employment."
