Tulane University Careers & Info

Tulane University
Overview Tulane University is a private university located in New Orleans Louisiana, and is a member of the Association of American Universities. The university was founded in 1834 under the original name of the Medical College of Louisiana in order to combat endemic diseases such as smallpox and cholera. After a grant made by Paul Tulane and the establishment of the Tulane Educational Fund, the college became the only public American university to become privatized.

Tulane University expanded to include a graduate program in 1885. After a gift from Josephine Louise Newcomb, the university established the H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College in 1886, the first coordinate college for women and the later inspiration for founding women’s colleges such as Barnard and Pembroke Colleges.
