"I worked at ABF from 2015 to current in 2020. I moved there from YRC for basically the same job and took a pay cut to have more opportunity for advancement in the industry. I have enjoyed my time there and the workforce challenges within the structure. At this time, I would like to move into something different that can take my skills imbedded in me from experience and use them in a different setting. I will not bad mouth the company or the people within."
"ABF freight is not the easiest place to work but it is fair. Working with union type employees can be tough to adapt to and comes with a lot of rules. Currently working the inbound shift which is graveyard hours and it is tough for the body to adapt. The company offers competitive salaries and benefits but also doesn’t make you feel very valued."
"ABF runs freight 24/7 365 days a year, so starting out on the extra board (being 24/7 on call) can be tough for some. But ABF has even found a way to make that as easy. They run the calls on what they call "call blocks" so every 3 hours 12-3-6-9-midnight etc. they do call outs based on drivers needed and your seniority on the board. They also have a really nice website accessible through your mobile device that tells you your current board position 24/7 with real time updates every time you log on."
"Good culture, too many residential deliveries though"
"ABF Freight is a transportation company that operates less-than-truckload (LTL) network across North America to provide a seamless transportation services in short and long haul markets."
"Overall, it is a good company; but it's really hard to work with union employees."
"I've been employed with ABF for 5 years and considered the newbie compared to the other employees at the HawaiI terminal. The terminal is very small; branch manager, two office administers, two sales associates, a dispatcher, a dock worker, and three drivers. Being a small terminal allows us have a family-like atmosphere and high work morale. Employees with great work ethic is reason the employees in the positions mentioned above have been employed with the company for 8-20+ years."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
"Plan to use the job as experience only. Use it as a stepping stone to bigger and better careers with other companies. This is a company that does not train they employees."
What don't you like about working at ABF Freight Systems?
"The rules changed from one day to the next. Working in a work place without written operational procedures, in a union environment, is like a business that plans to fail. You have nothing to control what the workers can or can't do on a consistent basis. In past experiences in union operations, having written standard operation procedures agreed upon by both management and workers makes everyone work as a team. There was no consistence among employees because there were no written controls."
What suggestions do you have for management?
"I would treat all my employees like they have a brain. This company is scared of training their personnel to do their jobs. In this day and age working a maintenance shop without required diagnostic equipment it a waste of mechanic time, inefficient, and outright business irresponsible. You have mechanics that could fix simple problems, but without diagnostic tools the equipment must be farmed out to local vendors who do warranted work. The business model is just not cost effective."
