Autodesk Careers & Info

Current CEO: Andrew Anagnost

Status: Active

Autodesk, Inc. is the world’s preeminent producer of computer-aided design software (CAD) software, with applications in many different industries including architecture, construction, engineering, manufacturing and entertainment.

The company’s flagship product is a computer drafting program called AutoCAD which has revolutionized the world of design. Before AutoCAD, design in architecture, manufacturing and engineering was a lengthy, labor-intensive process that involved a drafting board, a lead pencil and a protractor. While AutoCAD was not the first CAD program, it was the first to run on a personal computer. AutoCAD was a huge success when it was first released in 1982, and Autodesk expanded rapidly. Today, over 12 million professional use AutoCAD. AutoCAD’s current release supports sophisticated 3D modeling techniques and is available in 21 languages.

Autodesk has a number of high-end clients who use AutoCAD in a variety of ways. The multinational energy corporation Chevron uses AutoCAD to map its land and offshore leases and other assets, plumbing manufacturing giant Kohler uses AutoCAD to help design toilets, bathtubs and sinks, while SONY Pictures plots all camera angles in AutoCAD prior to the actual shooting of a film.

Autodesk is headquartered in San Raphael, California, employs approximately 6,800 workers and earns revenues of approximately $1.7 billion annually. The company is organized into four segments:

• Platform Solutions and Emerging Business and Other (PSEB) which develops, customizes and manages AutoCAD across various market segments.

• Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC)

• Manufacturing Solutions (MSD) which provides customized solutions for industrial designers, manufacturers of automotive components and the tool and die industries among other things

• Media and Entertainment (M&E) which facilitates the creation of digital media in film, television, animation and gaming.

Autodesk careers tend to fall into two tracks: software engineering, as the company is continually refining, updating and adding new features to its products, and sales, as the company is continually expanding into new markets. Working at Autodesk is less of pressure tank than many other tech companies, due to the fact that the company has no real competitors. Autodesk culture is relaxed and comfortable. Autodesk benefits include health insurance choices at many different price points, coverage levels and specific plan provisions; life, vision and dental insurance; flexible spending accounts; income protection in the event that an employee becomes injured; and, in addition to paid holiday and vacation time, a six-week paid sabbatical every four years of continuous employment in the U.S.
