The first Bloomingdale’s store opened in New York’s Lower East Side in the late 1860s. During this time, most fashion retailers focused on only one fashion item. Bloomingdale’s was no different. They introduced their fashion forward hoop skirts to New York in the 1860s. In 1872, the store expanded to sell a variety of European fashions. By the 1920s, Bloomingdale’s was a household name, and the store expanded to cover an entire city block. Bloomingdale’s became the focal point for numerous gala events and fashion shows.

The store has been dedicated to the development of women since the 1940s. In 1947, the store hosted the “Woman of the Year” festivities. Today, the company focuses on women and breast cancer. They are currently raising money for breast cancer and intend to award $500 to a woman who pledges to tell other women about receiving an annual mammogram. Bloomingdale’s is committed to helping their community. Philanthropy is a part of Bloomingdale’s culture. The company also supports amfAR, which is a non-profit organization that aims to eradicate the AIDS epidemic globally. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Child Mind Institute, HELP USA and NRDC are all supported by Bloomingdale’s.

By the 1960s, Bloomingdale’s signature bag became a fashion statement itself. Everyone knew Bloomingdale’s was a success when a simple brown paper bag epitomized upscale fashion. Even Queen Elizabeth was excited about having the Bloomingdale’s experience. The store evolved into a destination and not just a simply a retail store. The store featured Ralph Lauren, Norma Kamali and Perry Ellis. Later, more exclusive merchandise was offered to customers and customized services.

Bloomingdale’s is also a strong believer in diversity and inclusion. The company hosted the Annual Human Rights Campaign in Washington D.C. and the Pride Parade in Atlanta. Their parent company Macy’s is also an active participant in the NAACP activities. Not only is the company committed to a diverse workforce, but part of Bloomingdales benefits focus on the Working Mother and making a comfortable work environment for employees of all types.
