"One of the few places in town to work."
What do you like about working at College of the Redwoods?
"I was free to design my own courses. The college was open to my ideas about creating on-line classes and offering interesting new courses. Learning was paramount to many students, making the job very rewarding at times."
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
"Determine whether or not management will support you in grading fairly and upholding school rules. Students will protest - fairly and unfairly, some with some maturity, and others with childish disrespect. Whether you succeed or not depends not only upon your ability, but also whether or not management is willing to assume the difficult responsibility of constructive management."
What don't you like about working at College of the Redwoods?
"A fairly large percentage of students were hell-bent on creating interpersonal dramas. Generations of poverty, drug abuse, disfunctional family relationships, and government and public school corruption lend to a culture of disrespect and intolerance of anyone in position of authority. Difficult but useful classes - like nursing - were terminated with lame excuse, avoiding complaints from students that classes were 'hard'. Opportunities were divided among far too many instructors to make a teaching career worth while."
What suggestions do you have for management?
"Understand the prevelant struggles of low employment, government and public school corruption, disfunctional family relationships, drug abuse within the local culture. Form close, supportive, and understanding relationships with faculty and staff. Upper management from Eureka should frequently drive down to Fort Bragg and form open and comfortable relationships with local faculty and staff - whether they enjoy making the long drive, or not. The distance between the Fort Bragg campus and HQ in Eureka is so vast and unraveled by upper management that the local authority gains far too much un-checked autonomy."
