Overview Howard University, located in Washington, DC, was founded in March of 1872 originally as a theological seminary for young African-American scholars. Today, it is a private, historically black university. The school has a Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education status of RU/H, which classifies it as a high research university. Howard University has nearly 11,000 students enrolled in both undergraduate programs and graduate studies. Graduate programs include those in business, pharmacy, law, divinity, and medicine.

The center is one of the world’s largest facilities used in researching African-American culture and history, as well as other nations. The Beltsville Center for Climate System Observation is a NASA research facility located on the Maryland campus of Howard University.
