"I worked at Huntington Learning Center in Plymouth, MN for three years and worked at another Huntington Center in the Twin Cities previous to this job. The previous center went out of business. The compensation is quite poor, even for licensed and certified teachers with Master's degrees. The starting pay at that time was about $13 per hour with only slight increases every year, that is, if they notify you that they want to give you an annual review. They would hold employee meetings starting at 8 p.m. on a Wednesday night and these would last until at least 10 p.m. Employees who are not scheduled for that day must make a special trip to attend and absences are cause for dismissal. They know many of us are teaching full time and this makes for a long day. The fellow employees are nominally helpful and there is no opportunity to make friendships on the job because it is constantly busy. The supervisors are constantly meeting with prospective parents to bring in more income for the center. The instruction materials used are very old and updated and probably from the 1980s. Corporate Huntington does not wish to spend the money to purchase and update new materials because that would cost so much money for the copyright. With the advent of the internet, there are so many reputable websites online that could be used for student instruction thus saving money. I am sure that Huntington charges anywhere from 49 to 80 dollars per instruction and this is a high cost. I didn't like my tenure at any of the Huntington Centers because of the low pay, and high stress (the teacher would have up to 4 students) at one time sitting at different carrels and this would be very stressful. The teacher must be careful of what is said and you never know who is reporting on whom. Avoid working for them."
"As the current Executive Director with Huntington Learning Center for over 6 years, I have found that helping students receive the best education possible is what I am able to do everyday. Currently, as the leaders of supplemental education for over 42 years, Huntington Learning Centers remain the only tutoring company that is Middle States Accredited, allowing your students to work with actual certified teachers in local schools. With over 300 franchises across the country and more to come, this family owned business still makes sure each and every student acquires the skills necessary to succeed in the classroom. This is truly an investment well worth your child’s future."
"It's not a bad environment in which to tutor, however there could be more tables and less of those inconvenient cubicle desks. The pay is poor, but they do take care of scheduling for you, which, if you've ever done private tutoring, you know can be a pain. They should branch out to college campuses, but rarely do."
