Overview
The Peace Corps is an American program for volunteers that was established by the United States government in 1961 when John F. Kennedy was president. Its purpose is to promote peace and understanding by helping other countries. Peace Corps volunteers must be American citizens and usually have college degrees. After a three-month training period, they work in foreign countries for a minimum of 24 months.
Since its inception, the Peace Corps has had over 210,000 volunteers who have served in 139 countries. Currently, there are over 8000 people in 76 countries. Areas of service include education, health, environment, agriculture and economic development as well as others.
Peace Corps Job Information
Congress appropriates money each year to fund the Corps. The budget for fiscal year 2012 is $375 million and slightly over $377 million for fiscal year 2013. The money covers administrative costs and provides benefits for volunteers. Some of the benefits include monthly living and housing allowances, medical and dental coverage, technical training, travel to and from the country of service, student loan assistance and monetary bonuses when service is completed.
