1.9I've worked for Rodale Inc for under 5 years. The first two years were amazing, my department and company were in sync. Work was hard yet fulfilling. The company wide activities were super fun, and although they weren't mandatory, they were fun to do. I actually took joy into going to work.
After that my remaining time there went from the sky's the limit to a downward spiral. In a short time frame, I've watch the company go from the health/wellness lifestyle giant (taking great regard in the staff's work-life balance) and become an ugly, typical corporate entity. They once lived and breathed by the Rodale core values which have now been abandoned. Staff is underpaid (versus the rest of marketplace) and overworked (due to severe under-staffing (more on this in a moment)). There is mismanagement of internal resources which results in waste of time and money. Morale is at all-time low. When the firm isn't committing mass layoffs (due to being so wasteful) or their best talent is leaving because, a) they are not being promoted or b) swooped up by other organizations willing to pay and promote what Rodale can't and/or won't. Performance evaluations are a parody unto themselves, designed so you don't know where you stand in your department, and in turn, making it difficult to move up the corporate ladder.
Senior-level management has in-crowd mentality, as such, you can't get close to the inner circle a) unless you're a hard-core yes-person, b) brown-noser or c) both (and that still doesn't guarantee you an audience or seat at the table). Your hard-work gets barely noticed and once it does, you're so burnt out that you don't even want to be there anymore. I was fortunate to get out when I did, as I saw entire departments decimated to teams of 1-2 persons or eliminated completely. Senior-level personnel suffered the least casualties unlike middle management/ junior level staff. Best of luck to anyone who accepts a position in the New York office.
