Schering-Plough Corporation was a pharmaceutical company based in the U.S. It was established in 1851 by Ernst Christian Friedrich Schering and was named Schering AG. It merged with Plough in 1971 and acquired the name Schering-Plough Corporation. In November of 2009, the company merged with Merck & Co. and they have retained the name of the new company.

Schering-Plough manufactured different types of pharmaceutical drugs, including the popular anti-allergy medicines Claritin and Clarinex. Well known anti-cholesterol drugs, such as Vytorin, and Temodara, a drug for brain tumors, were also created by the company. Schering-Plough was ranked 17th among the top 20 pharmaceutical corporations in the US in terms of sales in June of 2005. Schering-Plough held 1.4% of the market share in the US during this time.

Fred Hassan was the last CEO of Schering-Plough, now known as Merck & Co. He joined Schering-Plough Corporation in 2003. At the time, the company was in dire straits because its popular drug, Claritin, had gone generic. Mr. Hassan is known in his field as a prolific dealmaker and a top ranked executive. He was able to resolve legal issues pertaining to making this drug generic, and finally gained back the company’s profitability. In 2004, the company was accused of using gimmicks and payoffs to doctors to prescribe their pharmaceutical drugs. With other academic partners, Schering-Plough was also involved in collaborative research to enhance the quality of life of people in society by creating drugs to prevent and cure diseases.
