"Best advice is document everything and prepare to sue. Owner interviews and asks women how they will manage their kids and work. Several EEO and labor violations - but you need a job right?! Owner is unethical and will expect you to do things on the edge of acceptability."
"Great place to work if you like ZERO Accountability, Cliques, & sluggish mgmt"
What do you like about working at Straub Construction?
"Fallbrook is a great little community with cool restaurants owned by locals. I also like free meals for bid day. I got some sweet pens too. Seriously though, there are some great people stuck in straub. None of those people are given any sort of authority whatsoever."
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
"Don't. Just don't. Expect rosie pictures to be painted, but it doesnt match the reality. Also, when interviewing, dont sit too close to the HR guy. Trust me."
What don't you like about working at Straub Construction?
"There are so many things. A top-heavy precon dept (there are 2 estimators now, with a cheif estimator, a director of estimating, a VP of precon AND a COO on top of them...for a company that will struggle to do $30m this year. Also, the owner is a weird, timid, greedy old man who will not listen or doesnt understand what people are suggesting. The HR guy is nuts and completely incompetent. Silos, dozens and dozens of silos and a us vs them attitudes between departments. Straub management LOVES to talk about change. Talk ENDLESSLY about change. Talk talk talk talk talk. None of them are competent enough to actually pull off change. Somebody at some point will need to do something should be their mission statement."
What suggestions do you have for management?
"President/owner - Retire, sell, close the doors or whatever, just get out and enjoy your millions. You are the luckiest SOB ever, because god only knows how you made any money with the half-assed approach to business you have.COO - More listening, less bloviating. Seriously, there are people there smarter than you give them credit for if you'd shut up and listen. Of course, you moved your family across the country for this crap-hole of a company, so I cant imagine you are too terribly happy.VP - you are ver very nice, but you need to retire or grow a set and LEAD.Director of Design and Estimating - Your abilitiy to avoid accountability for your own incompetence should earn you a medal. Your reputation no longer follows you by the way, it PROCEEDS you. Chief Estimator - How'd all that brown nosing work out for you People dont like you or trust you. Find something else to do while you still can.HR director - repeat after me: Healing crystals are no substitute for deodorant. Learn it. love it. live it, you ignorant boob."
