ACORN Overview

ACORN or the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now was a grass roots organization founded in 1970 by Wade Rathke and Gary Delgado. ACORN provided many services for low to moderate income people such as voter registration and affordable housing. ACORN helped organize fundraisers to help victims of Hurricane Katrina and the 911 disaster.

ACORN operated in conjunction with several non-profit organizations. ACORN worked to help pass strict laws regarding predatory lending and foreclosure scams. ACORN also helped with voter registration drives, with its focus on poor an minority areas that were targets of disenfranchisement.

ACORN Job Information

ACORN had more than 500,000 members and hundreds of chapters before it came under fire in 2009. A series of heavily edited and falsified videos produced by conservative operative James O'Keefe, lead to ACORN's downfall. Although numerous state and local officials found that the videos had no merit, the damage was already done. ACORN lost massive funding and closed in 2010.
