1.7Sad to visit the McGimsey Scout Camp this summer.
Walking around one can witness years of neglected maintenance, poor planning and lack of leadership for outdoor adventure operations. Concerns are avoided by Outdoor Adventure Director. She does not take responsibility for her lack of education, management and leadership experience. Too autocratic.
No secure gate entrance. Buildings and grounds are not being maintained even though camp has two rangers. Restrooms are filthy and not maintained. The grounds have high weeds. Why not mow? For the first week of Cub Day Camp not enough restrooms - portables no place until we complained; not enough water until we complained. Pool shut down because ranger did not check before swimming. Two restrooms out of order since last year. Wasp infestation in restrooms, picnic area, gym, etc. Have to complain to get anything done by grumpy rangers. Roads are blocked off to emergency vehicles. No first aid kit at Archery, BB-guns etc. staff have to make calls on personal phones. Two female staff left day care involving undisciplined boys to other staff and volunteers to worry about. Despite complaints to Outdoor Adventure Director she did nothing. Why does staff feel they don't work for volunteers? They push enrollment of LDS scouts despite non-active boys troops and packs. Are numbers inflated? Conduct a management audit of council management and leadership staff.
1.3If you are not comfortable working for a controlling, "got-to be-right" manager the Outdoor Adventures (AE) Dept is not for you. The AE Director is a military styled manager, not a leader. She prefers women and those who she can direct. She burns out staff. The BSA CEO can help all by requiring the Director and McGimsey Camp Ranger and others training in effective communications, planning, leadership, etc.
