"Great experience: I was promoted every year for six years;"
What do you like about working at A.M. Best?
"It was very organized, very fair and gave anyone with talent a chance to rise up in the ranks."
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
"Be very conservative in dress. I was once sent home because my tie wasn't conservative enough. It had a BotticellI painting on it."
What don't you like about working at A.M. Best?
"It was cold and dark and snowy in the winter (New Jersey)."
What suggestions do you have for management?
"None really. I think that if they were more innovative back when they were on top they wouldn't have been blindsided when the competition gave them run for their money years later. They were very comfortable after 100 years of being #1 and never dreamed they'd have competition."
"Stable and secure, but somewhat static"
What do you like about working at A.M. Best?
"Pleasant environment, excellent co-workers, convenient to my home, beautiful campus."
What don't you like about working at A.M. Best?
"Extremely conservative upper management that hasn't yet entirely entered the late 20th century when it comes to employee benefits and perks; for example, it took a threatened strike by the financial analysts to get a 401K implemented circa 2000, and flex time was a dirty word up until 2008 or so. Although the company is supposedly very profitable, it phased out bonuses in 1990 and has consistently cut back on quality of life perks over the years. Employee retention doesn't seem to be a priority. No training for new technologies -- employees are thrown a product and expected to pick it up on the job. (To be fair, there is reimbursement for the cost of courses, but qualification is a pain, possibly deliberately so.) Slow advancement/promotion regardless of performance."
What suggestions do you have for management?
"Just because the company is privately held doesn't mean it doesn't have a responsibility to its stakeholders -- treating employees as disposable components doesn't earn you the kind of loyalty that can turn an average employee into a super one. Drop the condescending schoolmarm/disciplinarian tone that permeates every communication from HR. And discover what the 21st century has to offer in the way of benefits for employees."
