Arby's was originally founded on July 23, 1964 when Leroy and Forrest Raffel opened the doors of the first Arby's restaurant in Boardman, Ohio. Less than one year later, the Raffel brothers launched the first Arby's franchise in Akron, Ohio.

When choosing a name for their new venture, the Raffel brothers chose a play on their own initials – RB’s. This stood for “Raffel Brothers” although it is commonly assumed to mean “roast beef” instead.

The Arby's restaurant chain later became known as Arby’s when in 2005 Triarc Companies, Inc. acquired Arby's largest franchisee, RTM Restaurant Group, to form the Atlanta based Arby’s Restaurant Group, Inc. In 2008, Triarc Companies, Inc. merged with Wendy's International, Inc. forming what is now the third largest fast food restaurant company in the United States.

Today, Arby’s owns and operates over 1,000 restaurants in the United States and abroad.
