Atlanta Public Schools Overview

Atlanta Public Schools was established in 1872 in Atlanta, Georgia by an ordinance passed by the Atlanta City Council. Today, the school system has more than 50,000 students enrolled in 103 public and charter schools around the district. Notable former students of the district include civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., United States Senator Johnny Isakson, founder of Chick-Fil-A Truett Kathy, and construction mogul Herman Russell.

Atlanta Public Schools has implemented the Effective Teacher in Every Classroom (ETEC) Initiative in its schools with the help of a $10 million investment from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The goal of the initiative is to recruit, prepare, and place effective teachers in all of the teaching positions in all of the schools throughout the district.
