Technical Consultant

"Sounds like a great place at first but once you're there is a big let down"

What do you like about working at CCI Europe?

"Relaxed and informal work environment. People can work at home sometimes, no one gets on your back if you need to work at home for a day or take a sick day. My immediate manager was very cool and laid back most of the time. Every summer for one weekend the company has a overnight getaway to a local resort which is a lot of fun and everyone looks forward to it. Very small close nit group. You're not just a number here."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Dress like a consultant. They won't ask you many coding or technical questions but they probably should, because once you get the job you'll be looking at obscure, badly written script code and be expected to understand how it works and debug it on the spot."

What don't you like about working at CCI Europe?

"Their main product is very obscure and VERY complicated and in a dying industry no less. Their main product, NewsGate, must have been designed designed by sadists. Even the industry hates to use it. They just have no other choice. There isn't really anyone else in the dying newspaper print publishing industry. Training is awful and almost non-existent and everything you do on their platform, which uses 30 year old technology is a hack that you're just supposed to know. Because the platform is so obscure and niche there are virtually no outside sources that you can consult, google wont help you and there are very few resources available for self study. If you're one of the few lucky ones, they will send you to Denmark for training, but dont count on it. Usually only the front-end App guys get that. After a while, if your having trouble wrapping your head around their obscure system, and your not a favorite that has been there for 5 years, they will start to turn on you in subtle and not so subtle passive aggressive ways. If your late 5 minutes in the morning, you will get a talking to even though others regularly come in an hour after you got in. If you need to work at home because something came up, you will get a nasty email, essentially threatening you even though other people in the company always send last minute emails that they are working from home. And then if you have questions about their system or how something works, you start to get the eye-rolls and the sighs. This company churns through otherwise talented Technical consultants. Hiring and getting rid of them in the course of a year or so. Things are better on the app side. But if you're on the technical side, watch out. A couple of years ago, they also got rid of their QA department and documentation departments. For a software company, that should be a big red flag. After working here, you will not have learned anything of transferable value. Want to get ahead and continue your education either at university or get a useful cert Forget it, not here. No education benefits. Want to invest in a company matched 401k Forget it not here. They do keep their snack room well stocked though."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Bring back your documentation and QA team! Also, invest in a thorough training program for technical consultants. Have some vision and innovation for the future. Print newspapers is a dying industry."
