Overview Chapman University is a private and non profit educational institution based in Orange, California. The university is affiliated with the Christian Church – Disciples of Christ and the United Church of Christ. There are currently 5,000 undergraduate and 1,500 postgraduate students attending the institution.

The university was founded in 1861 and called Hesperian College. What set it apart from most of the colleges at the time is that students of all racial backgrounds and women were admitted, which was considered as a radical departure from the norm during the 19th century. Hesperian College was purchased by the California Christian College in 1920. The new institution was renamed Chapman University in 1934, in honor of its main benefactor, Charles Chapman. It has since grown to be the biggest private university in Orange County, California
