3.5Salaries tend to be very low compared to other companies in the U.S., but the benefits are very good, and turnover is relatively low. Be advised that most of the other programming jobs in Lincoln/Omaha require experience in .NET and/or web-based tools. Design Data uses Linux C/C for a desktop application, so the skill set that you develop will not transfer easily to other companies in that region. If you leave, you'll probably have to move to another city to get a comparable Linux job. If you're a structural engineer that knows how to program in C , then the company should be a great fit. The engineering team is a wonderful group of people, and some days I still miss seeing them. Just keep in mind that most of your day will be spent solving C programming problems, not structural engineering problems. You have to be a coder first, and an engineer second, at least in terms of how you spend the day. When I left, the tools that we used were ancient -- old monitors, old computers, and long wait times for compiles. I left a while ago, however, so maybe things have gotten better since then. I hope so.
