Electrical engineers create, test and oversee the construction of various electrical equipment, such as navigation systems, electric motors and power generation equipment. Engineers also create systems and equipment for planes, communication and portable music players. The job duties of an electrical engineer are quite similar to those of an electronics engineer.
Skillset: It helps if an electrical engineer has good active learning skills so that they can apply what they learn in school to work projects. Engineers also have to use calculus and other advanced mathematics on the job and keep track of several designs. Electrical engineers also have to work with complex systems and electrical components.
Education: Engineers are required to have a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. It's advised that future electrical engineers make sure that the program they are enrolled in is certified by ABET (formerly the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology). Students also have the option of enrolling in a five-year program where they can earn both a bachelor's and master's degree.
Career Path: Electrical engineers working with government contracts are encouraged to obtain licensure. In order to qualify for licensure, engineers must have the right degree, adequate work experience and successfully pass exams.
