1.4The Ensign Group purchased all of the former Harmony Assisted Living facilities in Wisconsin last summer, and after telling employees, residents and their family that nothing would change, Ensign immediately made drastic cuts to staffing and reduced 8 hour shifts to 7.5 hours or less. Ensign is absolutely clueless in WI and it became apparent soon after I started working for this company that the only thing that matters is the bottom line, heads in beds and making a profit. I was thrown into the worst mess imaginable and was never told that it was so broken or that I was the 5th executive director at that ALF in 2 years. Employees took over, no leadership, no structure and no one working there knew a thing about the state mandated regulations. Not one area of operations was in compliance!
I begged for help in cleaning up the mess and got none. Just threats with losing my job if I did not fill the place and had so much work heaped on me that I worked 11 or 12 hours a day and 7 days a week. Executive Directors are worked to death - you are the receptionist, accounts payable, accounts receivable, sales and marketing, business office manager, human resources, maintenance, help answer call lights, serve meals, work in the kitchen and pick up caregiver shifts if you can't find coverage. Total insanity!
I was constantly pressured to admit and keep residents that needed more care than we could provide. No wonder employees come and go rapidly and Wisconsin communities are a disaster - every administrator is miserable and looking for work elsewhere. Core values are a joke because upper management treats facility administrators horribly. Stop saying you cannot find quality management level employees in Wisconsin. Ensign does not understand our state regulations for CBRFs and only cares about making money. Ensign needs to stop saying they can't find good management material in WI. It's not us, it's YOU! Ensign should get out of WI and go back to California!
1.6Executive directors are forced to understaff their facilities while being threatened with job loss if they don't fill the place, even if it means admitting and maintaining residents needing more care than the assisted living community can provide. Executive directors are worked to death and do not have any support staff. Executive director is also the receptionist, accounts payable, accounts receivable, sales and marketing, business office manager, human resources, maintenance, and also answer call lights and work in the kitchen.. All this in 12-plus hour days and constantly being threatened with termination if they don't keep the place full. No thanks or appreciation is given. Like his dad did in the nursing home business (Beverly Enterprises), the guy at the top at the Ensign Group, is buying up all the assisted living facilities he can find across the U.S. The Harmony Assisted Living communities in WI were on the verge of bankruptcy when Ensign acquired them last summer. All Ensign wants is 'heads in beds' and pressuring the facility administrators to do that any way possible. These facilities are forced to admit and retain residents with multiple in-depth medical needs that the staff is not able to care for. So-called core values are a joke, just a smoke screen to mask all the unethical business practices. Most of us are smart enough to see through it.
2.9Ensign is an average large company. For such a large company, I expected more competitive pay, better benefits and more opportunities. I found that they do not invest in their employees nor do they give all the tools needed to do the job.
