An IT analyst evaluates data processes, user requirements, procedures, and problems. Their goal is to create electronic processes to replace existing ones. They may also analyze existing software to find improvements. In some cases, they will evaluate and recommend consumer software packages.


Skill Sets: Most IT analysts have a background in programming. An analyst needs the ability to work with business staff as well as IT personnel, often acting as a liaison. This position requires good communication skills, comprehensive business knowledge, and intimate information on computer systems.


Education: There is no set path to becoming an IT analyst. Most begin with a college degree in Information Technology or Computer Science. Almost all take classes in programming, systems analysis/design, and database analysis/design.


Career Path: Most IT analysts begin their careers as programmers with either an associate or bachelor's degree in IT or Computer Science. As they gain experience, they begin designing sections of software. With more exposure to business, they work into analyst positions.
