Line cooks are responsible for the preparation of food and beverages at restaurants and other food establishments. On a typical day, a line cook will set up their work stations and stock necessary items. They may also organize and clean kitchens and various storage areas.


Skillset: Line cooks must possess basic cooking and preparation skills. They must have an understanding of sanitary food handling procedures. Line cooks much also be well versed in using a variety of food service equipment such as knives, grills, pots and pans, food processors, and drink dispensers. Communication skills are also required as they will be frequently dealing with customers and fellow employees.


Education: Typically a high school diploma or GED and basic cooking skills are required to become a line cook. A degree from a culinary school can also be extremely helpful.


Career Path: Line cooks are expected to have a strong grasp of basic cooking and communication skills. Pursuing a degree in culinary arts will help further advance a line cook’s career and allow for promotional opportunities. Internship and personal projects are a great way to increase experience and build a resume.
